Design and construction of the BX1 datacenter in Bordeaux (33)
The new BX1 datacenter in Bordeaux will have a surface area of approximately 1,800 sqm divided into 6 modules. Each module will be able to supply 500 kW IT, a total of 3 MW IT for all the modules installed at the end of the 3 phases.
Geographically located in the southwest of France, near the Atlantic coast, Bordeaux is emerging as a new key digital zone on the global connectivity map. A pioneer in the smart city concept, the city has attracted a high concentration of start-ups and is home to cutting-edge industries in the aerospace and optical sectors. It is also home to a thriving community of international and local companies seeking low latency, higher bandwidth and enhanced connectivity with leading network, content and cloud service providers to establish and grow their businesses.

BX1 will be the first Equinix datacenter to take advantage of innovative modular edge design principles that enable infrastructure deployment in record time. Each module consolidates multiple functions into a single block – for example, all of the cooling equipment – and incorporates best practices we have learned from our hyperscale and retail deployments. Using a standard catalog of design modules reduces cost and deployment time while improving efficiency, scalability and flexibility.
The modular edge design includes the following additional benefits:
CAP INGELEC is proud to accompany Equinix in the design and realization of this Datacenter with an innovative design (modular infrastructure), respecting the best standards of energy performance.
After having entrusted us with the design of its new BX1 Datacenter in Bruges (33), Equinix has just commissioned us to carry out the turnkey works of the first phase. This project has the particularity of developing a modular datacenter concept: a world first for Equinix!
The modules will be delivered in kit form to be assembled on site (by Vertiv) and will include an IT room of approximately 300 sqm, two power rooms with UPS and the associated chillers. Each room will be sized for 500 kW IT.
From then on, Cap Ingelec’s mission will concern the creation of the environment to accommodate these modules (civil engineering), the creation of the common technical infrastructures (HV, Fuel, BMS, DIPI, Security…), and the creation of an office building to the required standards. Work started in November 2020 with a target delivery date of end June 2021.
Beyond this pilot project, the challenge for Cap Ingelec is to be able to industrialize a know-how to accompany Equinix in other cities in France and internationally.
“The development of BX1 is part of our ongoing commitment to the French market to further support the growth of the local digital economy and digital transformation strategies. This is an exciting project, which marks the birth of the first state-of-the-art computerized data center in the region, and also provides a connectivity hub for the AMITIE cable. By locating in Bordeaux, we hope to make New Aquitaine a model of innovation, addressing technology issues and seizing digital business opportunities. With fiber links to our Paris locations, companies deploying in BX1 will have direct and secure connections to a complete digital ecosystem.”
